I’ve already listened to this twice and I expect to listen to it again in the future. Chris Patton’s reading was entirely competent and his voice is well suited for the teenagers in this story. Her work is dark and decadent and delicious. Poppy Z Brite is like chocolate and absinthe for breakfast. She also has a real plot for this novel, unlike her first. Her writing here is less florid than in her first novel Lost Souls, but then again none of these characters are vampires. Brite offers up another dreamy, sex-filled story of teens and young adults who have grown up to be punks, goths, and the beautiful, fragile people on the margins of late 20th century society. Brite’s first novel, Lost Souls, was nominated for Best First Novel of 1992 by the Horror Writers Association and for a Lambda Literary Award.
